The card of Poker is one of the most popular casino games in the world. There are lots of variations though, and when you are just starting out it can be a bit confusing as to which cards or hands of cards are of the highest value and how you should place your bets and play the game. In this article we take a look at which are the highest hands or most valuable hands in the game of poker.
Ranking of cards
While the different variations of poker will change how you construct your hand of cards, the value of the cards, or the ranking of the cards is standard across all different types of poker. The player with the most valuable hand of cards wins that deal.
While the different variants of poker may influence how you get to your selected five cards, but ultimately all games will involve players comparing the value of their five selected cards.
Single card rankings
The easiest place to start is to look at the rankings of the cards as they stand alone – these are all ranked at face value with the Ace the highest and then in descending order of King, Queen, Jack, Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, and Two. The Ace can switch to be low (as One) when it is used in a straight (for example: One, Two, Three, Four, Five).
The suits of the different cards are important when building a hand of cards that forms a flush. There is no specific ranking value attributed to the suits of the cards.
This is one of the most exciting hands of cards to see building up in front of you. A straight flush contains five cards in a numerical sequence and they are all of the same suit – for example, it could be that all of your cards are Diamonds and you are holding the Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten. If two players have a Straight Flush then the players who has the highest ranked cards (based on face value, not suit) will win.
This is a very valuable hand – it is an ace-high, straight flush. For example you might be holding a hand of five Hearts and they are the Ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. This is the highest ranking hand in standard poker.
Four of a kind
This is a great hand that contains four cards of one number (plus one unmatched card). For example you might have four Sevens, or four Tens. If two players both have Four Of A Kind then the player with the highest ranking cards (based on the numerical face value of the cards) will win.
This is a hand that contains three cards of one number and two cards of another number. For example you could have three Fours and two Sevens. If two players both have a Full House, the player with the highest ranking three-match cards will will.
