Blackjack is one of the most popular card games and one of the most popular casino games in the world. It’s popular for a range of reasons, but mainly because it is simple to play – the rules are relatively straightforward and the betting is easy to follow. A lot of players also like that they are playing just against the dealer (or the house) as opposed to Poker where you are playing against the other players at your table.
There is some skill in Blackjack, but to a large extent you are at the mercy of the cards, trying to decide whether to risk another card to get a higher score or to sit safely and hope that you have enough to beat the dealer.
In this article we share with you some hints and tips to help improve your Blackjack game and hopefully help you to become a winner.
Know when to hit
When you request another card from the dealer that is a hit. If you have a hand totalling 12-16 then you should always hit.
Know when to stand
When you decide to hold your hand and see if it can beat the dealer, this is known as standing. If you have a hand totalling 17-21 then you should always stand.
Be strategic with your splits
When you are dealt a pair of cards, you have the option of splitting them and playing two separate hands. The generally accepted approach here is to split when you have aces or 8s; but don’t split 4s, 5s, or 10s. Other cards have some complexity, but splits should be exercised with caution.
Don’t exceed your limits
This is a rule that applies to any casino game, but it’s sensible that before sitting down at the Blackjack table you set yourself a spend limit and you do not exceed that limit. Gamblers who ignore their limits and try and play their way out of a losing streak generally just play themselves into trouble and more debt than they can handle. If you have spent your money for the night you need to simply chalk it up to experience and hope for better cards next time you hit the Blackjack table.
Mind your manners
Under no circumstances should you be rude to the dealer or other players. It is frustrating when the cards aren’t going your way, but the dealer doesn’t control the cards. You have to remain focused on the things that are within your control – you control what you bet, you control when you bet, and you control at which casino table you bet at. If you are not winning, and you feel yourself becoming frustrated or angry, then you need to recognise that and find another table or walk away from the game for the night.
Blackjack is a simple game that can rewarding and a lot of fun. Remember how the game works, stay in control, within your limits, and hope that the cards fall your way.
